Immersive virtual reality (IVR) case studies

IVR gives students a multilevel, systemic view of an organisation: processes, people, workplace, products, etc. As well as providing students with the experience of previously inaccessible contexts – due to access restrictions (for example, as in the case of dangerous environments) and cost considerations (for example, linked to small group size) –, the technology also provides a genuine hands-on experience in which students are part of the action. At the same time, its “fun” dimension (“edutainment”) stimulates their motivation and assimilation.

These beneficial outcomes have been recognised externally as well, with the ExE project receiving multiple awards and recognition from both the academic and professional community, such as:

  • in 2017, during the 7th session of IT Night, an event for digital companies, the project won a gold award in the human management and collaborative work category;
  • in 2018, it was selected by AACSB as one of the thirty “Innovations that Inspire – Category C: Enhancing Approaches to Leadership Education Development”;
  • in June 2018, it was presented at the EFMD annual conference in Copenhagen;
  • in November 2018, the project was presented at the global conference “Reimagine Education”, organised by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), a leading global higher education company, together with the Wharton School Learning Lab. At the conference, the ExE project was among 155 shortlisted projects (out of 1,184 educational projects submitted for consideration) and one of only three French projects presented.

The 6netic virtual immersive reality case study (in French and English) has been designed to enable students (third degree bachelor to MBA) equipped with a virtual reality headset, a smartphone and the ExE 6netic application – to experience being immersed in a sales outlet for mobile phone repairs and accessories and in its different departments, where they are able to make a critical analysis, and then recommendations.

The Leclerc Drive virtual immersive reality case study (in French and English) has been designed to enable students (third degree bachelor to MBA) equipped with a virtual reality headset, a smartphone and the ExE Leclerc Drive application to be placed in the position of a logistics and supply chain management consultant. The case enables students to reflect on the management of logistics flows in a drive-through store, by modelling existing flows, analysing the choices made, and proposing reasoned improvements. The case has been developed to show how a warehouse operates, as part of a course in logistics and supply chain management. It can also be used in a retail-marketing course.

The two Enedis virtual immersive reality case studies (both in French and English) have been designed to enable students (third degree bachelor to MBA) equipped with a virtual reality headset, a smartphone and the ExE Enedis application to question the management of workspaces. The case study allows the discussion of the issue of managerial support for the implementation of the workspace, through the exploration of several open spaces and the discovery of feedback from a plurality of actors of this change. It works by immersion, in the sense that virtual reality technology offers the learner the opportunity to move within these open spaces, which they can explore and analyse, and to meet the actors of their design and implementation.
